# Brave to Rebuild (Сміливі відновлювати)

> Ukrainian charitable foundation rebuilding war-damaged towns and villages. We repair homes, schools, and hospitals, coordinate volunteers from Ukraine and worldwide, and advocate for Build Back Better reconstruction standards. Operating since May 2022. EDRPOU: 44943474.

Brave to Rebuild (registered as БО «БФ «Сміливі»», EDRPOU 44943474) is a Kyiv-based charitable organization focused on post-war reconstruction of communities in Ukraine. The foundation acts as an intermediary between international donors and local communities, working with construction companies and applying Build Back Better principles to every project.

Founded in May 2022, the organization started by supplying materials and organizing weekly volunteer trips to de-occupied territories in Kyiv and Chernihiv oblasts to clear debris and repair damaged buildings. It has since grown into a professional reconstruction organization with expertise in social infrastructure recovery.

## Key results (3 years of operation)

- UAH 110 million raised for community reconstruction from international organizations, businesses, and private donors
- 22 social infrastructure objects rebuilt (schools, hospitals, administrative buildings) across 5 regions using Build Back Better approach
- 150,000 people gained improved access to medical and administrative services
- 6,700 students gained access to better learning conditions
- 2,000+ volunteers participated in reconstruction projects and events
- 1,300+ bicycles repaired and delivered to de-occupied territories
- 300+ objects cleared of debris in Kyiv oblast

## Core activities

- Reconstruction of social infrastructure: repair and modernization of schools, hospitals, community service centers (CNAPs), and other critical facilities in war-affected communities
- Private housing repair for vulnerable populations: supporting families who invest in their own home repairs but need help with materials and volunteer labor
- Volunteer coordination: organizing volunteer events (toloka), construction camps, and emergency response teams involving both Ukrainian and international volunteers
- Emergency response: rapid deployment of volunteer teams to assist with shelling aftermath in Kyiv and suburbs (window boarding, debris removal, structure dismantling)
- Policy and strategy development: expert recommendations, methodologies, and roadmaps for effective reconstruction in Ukraine
- Brick recycling center: joint project with ReThink Ukraine producing bricks from recycled construction debris

## Build Back Better principles

The foundation applies these principles to every reconstruction project: participation (workshops and interviews with beneficiaries), partnership (engaging communities and building users), inclusivity (modern accessibility standards), space reimagining (forward-looking spatial planning), energy efficiency (solar panels, insulation, modern ventilation), environmental sustainability (reuse of construction materials), cultural heritage preservation, safety (shelter construction and multi-functional use), and volunteerism.

- 118 animal enclosures built for a shelter housing animals evacuated from Donetsk oblast
- 1,374 bicycles repaired and donated to people in de-occupied communities
- Documentation of 400 damaged housing objects in Kyiv and Chernihiv oblasts (methodology development and public catalog)
